List of EHR and EMR systems
Remote scribes and medical virtual assistants do not need every electronic health record. Hospital jobs name Epic, Oracle Health (formerly Cerner), or MEDITECH. Office and specialty jobs name athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, Veradigm, Practice Fusion, AdvancedMD, DrChrono, Tebra (formerly Kareo), ModMed, CureMD, or Greenway. Learn the systems your target postings name.
Adoption figures on this page are from the ASTP hospital EHR brief and the office-based physician EHR quick stat. Privacy duties follow the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the HIPAA Security Rule, as HHS publishes them.
Which EHR and EMR systems show up in remote scribe and medical VA jobs?
The table is a working list of EHR and EMR products that remote scribe and medical virtual assistant postings name. It is not a ranking and it has no market-share column. Hospital products here are Epic, Oracle Health (Cerner), and MEDITECH. The rest are ambulatory or specialty products used in clinics. Learn a system when a posting you want actually names it.
An electronic medical record (EMR) is the chart inside one practice. An electronic health record (EHR) is that same kind of software when the record is built to move between settings. Job posts use both names. The product name is what the hiring manager means.
Paper charts are rare in the jobs this page is about. In 2024, 99.4% of U.S. non-federal acute care hospitals had adopted a certified EHR, and 91% of U.S. office-based physicians had adopted a certified EHR (95% had adopted any EHR), according to the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy. Those figures are adoption of some certified system, not a share for any vendor in the table.
The same hospital brief's 2024 appendix gives the inpatient developer shares: Epic 50.8%, Cerner/Oracle Health 20.1%, and Meditech 15.6%. The table below is not that ranking. It adds the ambulatory systems scribe and medical VA postings name, which that hospital survey does not cover.
| Vendor | Typical setting | Cloud or on-premises | What a remote scribe or medical VA does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epic | Hospitals, health systems, and their clinics | Customer-hosted or Epic-hosted. You cannot sign up for a personal Epic account. | Scribes document the visit in that health system's Epic chart for the clinician to sign. Medical VAs in Epic clinics schedule, register patients, route messages, and enter referrals the site allows. |
| Oracle Health (Cerner) | Hospitals and health systems | Many sites still run Millennium (PowerChart), on the health system's servers or vendor-hosted. Oracle has been moving hosting to its own cloud. Ask which chart the job opens. | Scribes document in PowerChart or the site's current Oracle Health chart. Medical VAs do the clinic tasks that system exposes: scheduling, referrals, and message routing. |
| MEDITECH | Hospitals, especially community hospitals, and their clinics | Expanse, the current web EHR, is licensed (the hospital hosts it) or delivered as MEDITECH as a Service, a cloud subscription. | Scribes document in the Expanse chart. Medical VAs handle scheduling and registration tasks the hospital turns on for them. |
| athenahealth | Office-based and ambulatory practices | Cloud. athenaOne is the vendor's browser product, with the EHR, practice management, and billing together. | Scribes write the office-visit note in the encounter. Medical VAs schedule, work the inbox, check eligibility, and move referrals and billing worklists. |
| eClinicalWorks | Ambulatory practices and community health centers | The current product is cloud-based. Older sites can still be on an earlier install, so ask which version the job uses. | Scribes document the office visit. Medical VAs schedule, message, refer, and support billing in the same chart. |
| NextGen | Ambulatory and specialty practices | NextGen Office is cloud software for smaller practices. NextGen Enterprise has been sold hosted and on-premises. Ask which one the job uses. | Scribes document the encounter in the NextGen product the practice runs. Medical VAs schedule and work the front-office queues in that same product. |
| Veradigm (Allscripts) | Ambulatory practices | Veradigm EHR serves larger and specialty groups. Practice Fusion, also Veradigm, is the cloud EHR for small practices. The old hospital product, Sunrise, is now Altera, not Veradigm. | Scribes chart the visit in Veradigm EHR or Practice Fusion. Medical VAs schedule, refer, and support billing. A posting that says Sunrise is a different system. |
| Practice Fusion | Small independent practices | Cloud. Veradigm owns it and describes it as the ambulatory EHR for smaller practices. | Scribes document the office visit. Medical VAs schedule, manage referrals, and help with the billing tasks the practice turns on. |
| AdvancedMD | Independent ambulatory practices | Cloud EHR with practice management and billing. | Scribes document the office visit. Medical VAs schedule, take messages, and work billing and eligibility tasks in the same system. |
| DrChrono | Independent and specialty practices | Cloud, with a mobile chart. | Scribes document the visit on the practice's DrChrono chart. Medical VAs schedule and handle messages and billing tasks the practice assigns. |
| Tebra (Kareo) | Independent practices | Cloud. The EHR was sold as Kareo. The company brand is now Tebra, which also covers billing and patient communication. | Scribes document the visit. Medical VAs schedule, bill, and answer patient messages in the Tebra or Kareo screens the practice still has open. |
| ModMed | Specialty clinics, including dermatology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics | Cloud. The specialty chart is sold as EMA. | Scribes document inside the specialty template the clinician uses, including procedure notes the practice has built. Medical VAs schedule and manage the specialty inbox and referrals. |
| CureMD | Outpatient practices | Cloud EHR with practice management and billing. | Scribes document the office visit. Medical VAs schedule, check eligibility, and work billing queues. |
| Greenway Health | Ambulatory practices | Intergy is offered hosted and on-premises. Some sites still use the older Prime Suite product. | Scribes document in Intergy or Prime Suite, whichever the practice names. Medical VAs schedule and work front-office tasks in that product. |
How do you choose which EHRs to learn?
Read current postings for the role and country you want, and tally the product names. Learn the two or three that appear most often in those posts. For a hospital scribe seat, start with Epic, Oracle Health, or MEDITECH. For a clinic virtual-assistant seat, start with the ambulatory product the posts name. Each site configures the product its own way, so the employer's training is the last step.
In 2024, over 90% of non-federal acute care hospitals used the same EHR developer across inpatient and outpatient settings, up from 62% in 2010, according to the same ASTP hospital brief. If a health system hires you onto its hospital chart, its clinics often open that same product.
Skip market-share roundups that do not name a public source. A posting is the better signal, because that employer already bought the system you would open. In the interview, ask which product, which version, and whether the seat documents visits, works the inbox, or both.
- Tally the product names in current postings for your role and country
- Keep the two or three names that show up again and again
- Practice the task those posts describe: the note, the inbox, or the schedule
- Ask which build the employer uses before you pay for a course
How do EHR skills affect remote scribe and medical VA hiring?
Hiring screens for comfort in a chart, not for a vendor badge bought online. Name the system the posting uses, and show that you can document a visit, move an inbox, or book a visit without inventing clicks. A class that is not that employer's build will not match their screens. Say which systems you have used, and say when the experience was a class rather than a job.
Scribe work is the visit note: history, exam findings, and the plan, written for the clinician to review and sign. Medical virtual assistant work in the same chart is scheduling, registration, referrals, messages, and the billing queues the practice assigns. Both are easier when you already know where those tasks live.
Do not claim a certificate the vendor does not issue to the public. Epic and Oracle Health train users through the organization that licenses the software. Write 'trained on a practice chart' or 'used Epic in a previous job' only when that sentence is true.
What HIPAA rules apply when you work in an EHR from home?
The HIPAA Privacy Rule sets national standards for protected health information held by covered entities and their business associates. The Security Rule requires safeguards for electronic records. Remote work is not an exception. Use only the access your employer issues, open the minimum the task needs, and keep the screen and the login to yourself. Follow the employer's policy when it is stricter than that.
HHS publishes both rules. A clinic is a covered entity. A scribe company that handles records for that clinic is usually a business associate. You follow the policies of the organization that employs you, including how you connect from home.
The employer's written policy wins when it is stricter than the habit list below. If a task would show you more of the record than the work needs, ask before you open it.
RemoteNurse practice charts are fictional and hold no patient data. They teach the shape of the work. They are not a substitute for the employer's system, and they are not a HIPAA certificate.
- Use the VPN, virtual desktop, or login the employer issued, and nothing else
- Open only the charts the task needs
- Keep the screen private and lock it when you step away
- Do not forward records to personal email, chat, or cloud storage
- Do not share a login or let someone else type under your name

Frequently asked questions
- What is a list of electronic medical records systems?
- It is a list of the software clinics and hospitals use to store the chart. People say electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) for that software. For a remote scribe or medical virtual assistant, the useful list is the products employers name in postings, not a ranking of every product ever sold.
- What is the difference between an EHR and an EMR?
- People use the two names for the same chart software. EMR often means the record inside one practice. EHR often means a record built to move between settings. Job posts say both. The product name, such as Epic, athenaOne, or Practice Fusion, tells you more than the label the post picked.
- Which EHR should a new remote scribe learn first?
- Learn the one your target jobs name. If those jobs are hospital scribe seats, start with Epic, Cerner or Oracle Health, or MEDITECH, because those are the hospital systems on this list. If the jobs are in a clinic, learn the ambulatory product the posts name. Two systems you can describe beat a certificate for a system your market does not use.
- Does a remote scribe need an Epic certification?
- No public Epic certificate is required to be hired as a scribe. Epic trains people through the health system that licenses the software. A third-party course can teach the shape of a chart. It will not match that site's screens, and the employer still trains you on its own build.
- Is Oracle Health the same product as Cerner?
- Oracle acquired Cerner in 2022 and now uses the Oracle Health name. Many hospitals still run Cerner Millennium, and clinicians still call the chart PowerChart. A job that says Cerner and a job that says Oracle Health may be that same chart or a newer Oracle Health product. Ask which one you would open.
- Can a medical virtual assistant work inside a hospital EHR?
- Yes, when the employer assigns clinic or access work on that system: scheduling, registration, referrals, and messages. Inpatient documentation is more often a scribe or a clinician. The posting should say which tasks are in scope. Do not chart clinical findings you were not asked to record.
- What should you never do with a chart while working remotely?
- Do not send protected health information to a personal email or chat, store it on a personal device, share your login, or let someone else see the screen. Use the connection the employer issued and open only the records the task needs. If the rule for a situation is unclear, stop and ask before you click.
