How many questions are on the NCLEX-RN?

The 2026 RN exam is variable-length CAT: 85 to 150 questions in up to five hours, chosen from your earlier answers, as the 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan sets out. RemoteNurse forms and adaptive practice use our own pools, selection rules and scoring.

These come straight from NCSBN’s own nclex.com pages, read on 30 October 2026. NCSBN and your nursing regulatory body (NRB) can change them, so confirm on the official pages before you book.

• Register with Pearson. You need your program code, an email address and a payment card, and the first and last name you register with must match your ID exactly. Pearson emails a confirmation within two days (NCLEX registration).
• Eligibility comes from your board. A registration stays open 365 days while it waits for your NRB to make you eligible. Once you are eligible, you must test within the validity dates on your Authorization to Test (ATT) email (NCLEX registration).
• Five hours, no going back. You have five hours, including breaks, and once you submit an answer you cannot return to that question. Arrive at least 30 minutes early; signature, photo and palm vein scan are captured before you test (NCLEX exam day).
• Results come from your board, not the test centre. Scores are not released at the Pearson centre; official results come only through your NRB (NCLEX exam day).
• Next Generation NCLEX. NCSBN launched the NGN on April 1, 2023, with new item types that measure clinical judgment (Next Generation NCLEX). The content blueprint is the 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan.

NCSBN's 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan is in force from April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2029, and NCSBN updates its test plans every three years. It splits the scored content across eight Client Needs categories, measures clinical judgment with 18 case-study items and about 10% stand-alone items, and gives every candidate 85 to 150 items in up to five hours.

• Length: every RN candidate answers at least 85 items and at most 150 in the five hours, which include all breaks. • Item formats: the plan says candidates may get stand-alone items and case studies written in multiple formats, that any item may include charts, tables and graphics, and it points to the NCLEX Candidate Tutorial for the formats. How do you prepare for the NCLEX-RN, step by step?

1. Baseline. Take the free practice exam, or the 25-question sample once you have an account.
2. Plan. Set a test date and the hours you can study. A free plan schedules the sample. Plus schedules the readiness exams.
3. Practice. Work questions in the categories you missed.
4. Review. Read the rationale, then the card or map for that concept.
5. Readiness sitting. The 4 matched readiness exams are on Plus. Sit one and compare its score with an earlier one.

How do you study for the NCLEX-RN while working full time?

If you work full time, plan NCLEX-RN study around a long, light schedule and NCSBN’s booking rules: your Authorization to Test (ATT) lasts as long as your board sets, which NCSBN says is about 90 days on average, and cannot be extended, and first-time candidates are offered a seat 30 days after asking to schedule. 8-week NCLEX-RN plan for working nurses (checked 2026-10-20)

This is RemoteNurse’s example schedule, built on published guidance. UWorld suggests a 6- or 8-week schedule if you work part time or have family commitments, and a 60- or 90-day timeline at 1 to 2 focused hours a day if you work full time. If 8 weeks is too tight beside a full-time job, UWorld frames 60 to 90 days for full-time workers and calls its 12-week plan the most manageable pace for them.
